At Bethany Community School, our Visual Arts program is designed to educate, inspire, and engage students in creative exploration while emphasizing the role of art in everyday life. Through hands-on learning, students discover the connections between artistic expression and cultural history, gaining skills that go beyond the canvas and impact their day-to-day lives.

Foundations of Art

Grade 6: Learning Foundations of Art

This course introduces students to the fundamental building blocks of artistic expression: the Elements of Art. Through hands-on activities, students will learn to identify and apply these elements, exploring their importance in creating and appreciating art.

Elements of Art Studied: Line, Color, Value, Shape, Form, Space, and Texture.

Art Movements

Grade 7: Understanding Art Movements

In this course, students dive into the transformative power of art movements, exploring their historical contexts and cultural significance. Projects will highlight the role of art in reflecting and shaping society while answering questions such as: When did these movements occur? Who were the key contributors? What cultural impact did they make?

Art Movements Studied: Cubism, Pointillism, OP Art, Pop Art, Surrealism, and Contemporary Art.

Exploring Artists and Their Legacy

Grade 8: Exploring Artists and Their Legacy

This class immerses students in the lives and works of renowned artists who have shaped art history and culture. Students will create projects inspired by lessons and discussions, focusing on questions such as: Who were these artists? What inspired them? What impact did they have on their communities?

Artists Studied: Mondrian, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Van Gogh, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Clare Youngs.

Digital Arts
Our Digital Arts program equips students with the tools and techniques to thrive in today’s creative industries. Students engage in project-based learning to develop technical proficiency and artistic innovation while understanding the role of digital media in shaping modern communication.

Digital Arts Curriculum

Graphic Design

Graphic Design I introduces students to the principles of design and visual communication. Through a blend of traditional methods and digital tools, students create impactful visual content for print, web, and multimedia applications.

Skills Covered: Layout design, typography, color theory, branding, and image manipulation.
Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Canva.
Students will also learn design thinking and explore the cultural and professional applications of graphic design in media and advertising.

Broadcasting

Broadcasting I immerses students in the world of media production, providing hands-on experience in video and audio creation. This course explores the technical and creative aspects of television, radio, and digital media production.

Topics Covered: Camera operation, scriptwriting, video editing, sound design, and live production.
Students will produce news segments, interviews, PSAs, and original content while learning about the ethical and legal responsibilities of media producers.

Publications

Yearbook Production offers students the opportunity to create the school’s official yearbook. This hands-on course develops skills in photography, journalism, graphic design, and project management.

Skills Covered: Theme development, layout design, photography, writing captions, and editing. Students will also manage deadlines, market the yearbook, and take on leadership roles such as editor or layout designer to ensure a high-quality final product.
